It works in its purest form.  The profit motive motivates.  More regulation forces markets to become less efficient.
With limited governmental controls capitalism may be enhanced to serve more individuals.  With excessive governmental controls, capitalism is smothered  ---  Dark Capitalism, i.e., corruption, reigns and thrives.
Many who work hard with perseverance will succeed to a degree determined by their individual skills.   Not everyone will succeed because some lack skills, others lack luck.

Laissez-faire

What causes severe market deviations?   Interfering with micro factors and mechanisms may not have obvious impact in the near term.  But over the long term, cumulative interference can come into confluence and result in fast corrections.  Interfering with natural internal and external market factors and mechanisms by outside agencies includes SEC regulations, Congressional tax legislation and rulings and inter-exchange competition.
